What Is An Herniated and/or Bulging Disc

A herniated disc refers to a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disc) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make your spine.

A spinal disc is a little like a jelly donut, with a softer water based center encased within a tougher exterior. Sometimes called a slipped disc or a ruptured disc, a herniated disc occurs when some of the softer “jelly” pushes out through a tear in the tougher exterior.

A herniated disc can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg, sometimes called sciatica, spinal stenosis, and progress to degenerative disc disease. On the other hand, many people experience no symptoms from a herniated disc.

The Treatment of the Herniated and Bulging Disc

Herniated discs are traditionally treated with medical drugs, steroid injections or surgical intervention. Unfortunately, none of these methods offer certainty of healing or actually fixing the problem. Long-term drug treatments greatly affects the function of the body and causes lasting and dangerous side effects. The pain often returns because the origin of the problem is not fixed. Surgical interventions come with a high risk of danger and besides doesn’t fix the cause of the problem. And don’t forget the side effects of the surgery itself.

Non Surgical Decompression and/or Chiropractic are viable therapies with the appropriate diagnosis and treatment protocol . It is based on the realignment of the spine and decompression of the disc that most often affects the spinal nerves and spinal cord. It is a gentle, non-invasive intervention that decreases pain and restores normal function following a protocol of corrective care. It can be performed during the acute phase, when the pain is severe, or chronic (ongoing) degenerative stages.
